Combermere
Is one of a very few buildings that explains the history of English building over a 700 year period, a unique abbey with fascinating architectural history.
The Abbey like many historic houses is suffering escalating maintenance and repair costs.English Heritage suggested they would support appropriate enabling development to raise the £3.5 million needed to secure the building’s future. Together with Crosby Homes we won a select competition for our proposals to create a new village.
A determined planning approach that the village must settle in from the start as a positive contribution to the history of the area, the Abbey and the Landscape that surrounds it, was adopted. However, whilst being very sensitive to local vernacular and architecture of the Abbey and its estate the new village will add its own special qualities to reflect the technologies and fashions of our own times
Thorough analysis of the surrounding villages, spaces, and building styles has informed the design, creating of a series of attractive sensitively scaled spaces, which are clearly defined and form the core of the cohesive settlement character. One hundred homes of varying sizes are proposed including single bedroom apartments, family terraces, and larger detached dwellings, a village hall and village green located at the heart of the scheme with amenities not only for residents but also for the wider community.
