Refurbishment of Science Block
In late 2003 the first two phases of refurbishment to the science block were completed. The School needed to undertake internal alterations to improve the existing facilities and at the same time undertake essential maintenance work to elements of the external fabric. The building is within a Conservation Area, and within the context of a Listed Building.
The Science Block was constructed in the 1960’s utilising an exposed in situ reinforced concrete frame with an external fabric largely of glazing and glazal-type spandrels between the frame members. The roof is flat asphalt-covered concrete, which over the years has become increasingly difficult to maintain.
The scope of works involved renewing the roof covering, with a new low pitch roof laid on top of the existing structure, and covered with steel profile sheeting. Deep new fascias helped to visually link the new roof to the existing building, and also provided further protection to the damaged edges of the concrete frame. The existing windows were replaced with new double glazed panels.
The internal work consisted of rationalisation of redundant cloakroom spaces into improved teaching laboratory spaces and a phased programme of re-fitting to all the other laboratory spaces.
